What is life?
Scientists today consider the question too large for their attention, the realm of mystics, not pragmatists. Yet we seem alone among the cultures of the world, past and present, to avoid this crucial issue - for how can we live meaningful lives without knowledge of the energetic structure of which we are part?
When the Asian practices Tai Chi or studies Fung Shui, when Africans or Native Americans stay up all night drumming and dancing, when shamans the world over connect their deeper selves, they are touching something real. Something that can be studied and considered. Something essential to our understanding what we are and, not surprisingly, essential to understanding how to heal this mess we have made of the world.
Astrologers study the wave pattern created by objects in space (many do not see it in those terms). These waves support and interfere with each other affecting the intricacies of our lives. But waves of what? Science has found that we and all that surrounds us are ultimately energy. Do these structures of energy interact with each other on levels beyond the physical - Meta-levels that would explain much of what we call the paranormal and magic?
The most effective route to this knowledge has always been self exploration - the Alchemical concept that what is outside oneself is also inside. This truly is the place for mysticism.
Yet there are those who have studied the flow and effects of this living energy, using their internal understanding to define parts of this grand enigma. Here Science can be brought to bear, however loudly the academics may protest the intrusion of poetry onto their turf.

Ley Lines
- The tilted poles of the Earth point out the great ages of time as they move through the Zodiac in the precession of the equinoxes. Our solar system revolves around our galactic center. It also moves up and down in relation to the galactic plane, sort of like a horse on a merry-go-round. The galaxy itself is moving in relation to other celestial objects, in complex motions we don't fully understand.

- Fantasy author Mercedes Lackey writes of a land where magic is stronger than it is in our world (at least the world of today). In her books all living things give off unseen energy that collects and flows underground in growing channels (leys) to points where these leys converge called nodes. The energy is then transmuted to a different level, normally by a slow "evaporation", but it can also provide the power for magical works. Dowsing
- A few years ago I was surprised to see my local water department dowsing to locate their underground pipes. The man I spoke to said it was their normal practice, more effective than listening devices or other methods. Dowsing has quietly taken a place in the modern world. It works. Somehow.

- Wilhelm Reich was Sigmund Freud's star student until they parted over an issue that would define Reich's career - the independent existence of sexual energy as a basic force of the universe. He later named Orgone what others have called Chi, Prana, Shakti, animal magnetism and many other names through time.
- Reich found that human suffering, at root, stems from our avoidance of this life energy, which is blocked in the human body.
